An Infographic Is Worth 1,000 Words

Social-Media-TodayFrom early childhood we have been influenced by photos, bold colors, and visual elements that help us process and comprehend the information that we are exposed to on a daily basis.  It all started with picture books, then educational television programs and interactive computer games, digital books, and now a multitude of emerging media including infographics.  Currently, infographics are one of the most used visually stimulating media used to illustrate data or to tell a story. The popularity of infographics can be traced back to its tendency to become viral and its capability of transforming a standard text content into an easy-to-understand visual content.

In today’s fast-paced world, we ingest an exorbitant amount of information in a short amount of time, reducing the desire to read lengthy and detailed messages; however, our interest is typically heightened when we see images je-visually-infographicand visual content.   The main appeal of visual content, via infographics, is its profound ability to communicate complex messages quickly while cutting through the clutter. This is extremely useful to digital marketers, whose goal is to capture the short attention span of its audience. People’s short attention span attributes to the fact that roughly 200% more images are liked on Facebook over text.  Think about it…if we see an image accompanied with text, we will typically pay more attention than merely text alone.

Marketers use infographics as a part of content marketing strategies to capture attention on social media, mobile, the Internet. By incorporating infographics into the mix, people will be more likely to share your content, and in the social media world, shareability is vital to increasing brand awareness and ROI. The more creative and well-designed infographics are seemingly more interesting which can lead to an increased desire to share and generate conversation.  The more conversation that is generated, the broader the audience will be.  So, as the saying goes, a picture an infographic is worth a 1,000 words. With a little time, effort, and data collection, you’ll be on your way to creating beautiful, shareable, and marketable infographics!

  1. I love info graphics because they are easy to read and get quick information. I like the long rectangle format they are mostly used on and I think it’s a great idea to make posters out of info graphs and place them in the walls of offices and businesses. Great post!

    As the saying goes “in a blink of an eye,” MIT researcher find that the brain can identify images see for as little as 13 milliseconds. As you mention Jenna, infographs are critical important for representing data. While getting the point across do we loose what may valuable information in that fleeting minute of interpretation? With short attention spans as we have already are we encouraging even shorter attention spans?

  3. I absolutely love incorporating infographics into my work as a student and as a public relations assistant. Reading data and statistics can be quite boring, but delivering it in a way that’s aesthetically pleasing makes it more exciting and interesting to read. I like how you mentioned infographics can help capture attention from consumers who have a short attention span. It’s so much more entertaining to look at photos, color, designs, etc. while reading compared to just plain text. However, there are some infographics that are incredibly long and lose my attention. Just because they are inviting and cut through the clutter doesn’t mean they can still take 5-10 minutes to read! I think it’s important for marketers to utilize infographics, but still keep it short, sweet and to the point.

  4. Jenna, about 2-3 years ago, Infographics were the buzz of the day. If someone created their content in infographic format, it rose to the top of the sharing mountain.

    But I wonder if that’s still true today? Like anyone, I appreciate a good infographic, it captures my attention, but it just doesn’t feel as “wow” as it used to a couple of years back.

    Am I the only feeling this? Are infographics still garnering the same pull as they did before?

  5. Social media is very important to any company’s brand awareness campaigns as well as SEO tactics. Anytime a marketer is working with social media, they need to think about what type of content will resonate best with their audience and what their audience is most likely to share. According to Twitter, pictures are tweeted 361% more than videos, a picture is re-tweeted 128% more than a video, and uploading and sharing of videos is the most common activity on facebook. Our love for visuals and easy to digest information make the infographic the perfect content for social media marketing!
